About the children

Where do the children come from? Why do they need help?

The children are orphaned, abandoned, or brought to the hostel by people worried about their safety or by parents unable to look after them.  It is not unusual for Kira and Rag to wake up to a baby left on the doorstep, or to find children abandoned and lost at the local bus or train station, where they have been left to fend for themselves.

The mothers of some of the children have had to resort to prostitution to make ends meet, and they either don't want the children, or they are too ill with HIV to be able to look after them. For some, their mothers have passed away due to HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.  It is not uncommon for the children to be physically on mentally abused by their parents or by clients of their mothers.

Make no mistake, there are not the same welfare services available for these children as there are in the UK.  Without Kira and Rag, these children would be left to fend for themselves on the streets, and may even be forced into prostitution to survive.

Kira and Rag are not well off, and without donations from the local community, The Kapporet Trust and other charities, they would not be able to help these children.

Even with our support, the children are still in very basic conditions, so we need your help to ensure these children get a fair chance at a better life.
